This post is a full Beginner’s Guide to cPanel. Everyone who sets up their own website is bound to use cPanel at some point in time. So it’s best to study a bit about it before starting up your own website. About 90% of the web hosting services provider cPanel nowadays.
The biggest problem is that cPanel is incredibly confusing for people who’ve never used a control panel before.
It doesn’t help that most of the guides on the Internet are written by super technical guys who forget that beginners don’t have the same level of understanding.
We’ve decided to compile a beginner’s guide to cPanel, so you don’t have to search the whole web for your common cPanel problems.
1. A Beginner’s Guide to cPanel – The Basics
This step is skipped in most of the so-called beginner’s guide to cPanel. First of all, we need to understand the functions of cPanel. cPanel is like a control panel which allows you to manage each and every element of your hosting account.
Since its graphical user interface is very sleek and clean, is well maintained with regular improvements updates and security measures, most of the web hosting companies use cPanels to allow their customers to manage their websites.
You can accomplish a variety of tasks with cPanel like
• Connect your hosting with domain names.
• Configure Emails for your website.
• Install WordPress
• Back up your site.
• Check bandwidth usage
• Upload files
and much more.
How to Log in:
Your web hosting provider provides you with the necessary password and username you’ll need to log in into cPanel. The fastest and most common way to log into your cPanel is to type the web address of your website into the search bar followed by :2083(secured) or :2082:(unsecured).
For example: http://www.domainnameofyourwebsite.com:2082 or http://www.domainnameofyourwebsite.com:2083.
You will then get a screen asking for your password and username.
2. A Quick Look at cPanel’s User Interface
Next, in our beginner’s guide to cPanel, we’ll take a quick look at its user interface.
You can use this to find functions quickly and effortlessly. Just type in what you’re after, and cPanel will dig it out for you!
You can find the navigation bar on the type right corner of your screen. It has options like notifications, account management, search features and log out.
• Search features is the exact same thing as the search bar.
• Account Management allows you to change your password, contact information, style and language.
• Notifications work as any other notifications area. It lists all the critical updates from cPanel like out of date apps, security concerns or other information that is must know.
• Log out is pretty self explanatory, it logs you out from cPanel. Use this when you’re done with cPanel.
You can find the sidebar on the left hand side of your screen. You will see four icons on the sidebar. From top down these stand for:
• Home is the primary page of cPanel, the first page you see after logging in.
• Statistics shows you important statistics like file transfer protocol accounts and domain names you have, bandwidth and disk space usage and how many email accounts you have.
• Dashboard is a page where you’ll find most of the most commonly used links and some common statistics like bandwidth and disk usage.
• User Management is where you can remove or add users from your account.
4. Updating Your Preferences And Managing Domain Names
Next in our beginner’s guide to cPanel, we’ll understand how to update preferences and manage domain names.
How to change your password:
After clicking “Password & Security”, you’ll be presented with a screen with fields for old password, new password and again new password. Fill in this form and your password will get updated. One can also click “Password Generator” to generate a strong password.
How to update your contact information:
After clicking “Contact Information” you will be taken to the screen with a form to update your contact information. Just fill it up and click save to update your contract information.
How to add a new user:
Let’s say for whatever reason you want to give access of your access to another user.
You can accomplish this by clicking on “User Manager” icon on the preferences screen.
Now you will be presented with a screen which will list all the current users of the website. Click “Add User” on the top right corner and you’ll be taken to another screen. Fill in the form and your new user will be added to the user list.
One of the great features of cPanel is that you can give varying degree of access to cPanel settings to different users for example, you may restrict a user from using FTP.
How to add/edit/remove domain names:
In the domain section, there is a button called “Addon Domains”. Clicking that and it’ll bring you to a screen that allows you to add new domains to your cPanel and by extension, your hosting package. Fill in the form and click “Add Domain” to finish up.
On the same “Addon Domain” screen, there’s a section to edit and remove domains.
4. Using File Manager
Next in our beginner’s guide to cPanel, we’ll understand how to use file manager.
One can manage their website’s files by navigating to “File Manager” Then you will have to select the website you want files from and click go.
A screen will open up with a list of all files that make up that particular website. It’s important that you don’t mess with these unless you know what you’re doing because a simple deletion of one of these may render your website useless.
